Charles registered for the draft in Pekin, IL on 16 October, 1940 and was inducted into the Army eat Richmond, VA on 8 May 1942.

In October1945, Sgt Walthall was listed in the $rd Anniversary book as a recently arrived member of Hq 1st,

He was discharged on 7 November 1945.

Charles was marked as "Married" when he enlisted but that marriage apparently ended in a divorce.  On 23 may 1947, he married Maude Lucille Pennington in Petersburg, VA.  It was the second marriage for both of them.
