the Houston National Cemetery, Houston (Harris county), Texas.
When G. W.
registered for the draft in 1942, he indicated that he was employed by
an ice company in Cotton Plant,. AR.
In October of that same year, he enlisted in the Army at Little Rock,
AR.
On 30 November 1942 Pvt Wampler was transferred from
Camp Joseph T. Robinson, North Little Rock, to Company I at Camp
Blanding, FL.
G. W. was nicknamed as "Dub" when he was a child but
in the service he was often called "George Washington" because of his having
just the initials "G. W." rather than a full name.
He was promoted to Pfc in April 1943 and then to
Sergeant on 1 February 1944.
