Bud was a Sergeant when he was wounded in the left shoulder by machinegun fire in Normandy.  It was an act so violent that he later said "It seemed as it was going to tear my shoulder off. It knocked me down, spun me around, and apparently as I was going down, put a couple of holes through my canteen."

He was appointed to the rank of SSgt just two weeks later and then on 31 Aug 1944 accepted a commission as a 2nd Lt.

He ultimately retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel.
