VERLON H. WEISS

  ARMY PFC Verlon H. Weiss, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy C. Ht. 4. Charles City, is scheduled to become a member of the Airborne Division when it is formally organized at Fort Campbell. Kv., September 21.
   Weiss has been serving in with the 508th Airborne Regimental Combat Team, which is now being airlifted to the U,S.  He was a rifleman in the Company G.
    Weiss, a 1953 graduate of Charles City high school,  entered the Army in January 1955 and received basic Training at Fort Chaffee. Ark. He has been overseas since July. 1955.

CHARLES CITY — Army Pfc. Verlon H. Weiss, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy C. Weiss, Charles City, participated in Organizational Day activities for the new 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, Ky. MISS SHIRLEY Jean Meyers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Meyers of Bassett and Verlon Harold Weiss, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy. Weiss of Charles City, were married in the First Methodist - Church at Austin. They are living in Charles City where both are employed. Both are Charles City High School graduates. She is a secretary at Dr. Salsbury's Laboratories and he is a mechanic at the Farm Tractor Co.

CHARLES CITY --- Miss Shirley Jean Meyers and Verlon Harold Weiss exchanged vows Saturday in the First Methodist Church of Austin, Minn, The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Meyers, Bassett [MN]. She is a secretary at Dr. Salsbury's . Laboratories. Her husband, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Weiss. He is a mechanic for Farm Tractor Co. The couple: will reside in Charles City.

CHARLES CITY --- Verlon "Chuck" Weiss, 73, of Charles City died Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at Mountain Vista Hospital in Mesa, Ariz.

Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Charles City, with Pastor Gary Van Wert officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date.  The family will greet friends at the church from 1 p.m. until time of services.

Verlon Harold Weiss was born Sept. 26, 1935, at Charles City, the son of Roy and Olive (Momberg) Weiss. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1953 and attended the University of Iowa.

In 1959, he was united in marriage to Shirley Meyers at Austin, Minn. For 23 years he was employed as a firefighter and for 45 years was in the insurance business. Chuck was veteran of the Army Airborne Paratroopers. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, American Legion, Moose Lodge and Elks Lodge where he was a trustee for eight years.

Chuck was Northeast Iowa's First Conference Wrestling Champion and in 1998 he was inducted into River City Softball Hall of Fame. His interests included golf, hunting, softball, dancing, chess, playing pool and cards.

Living family members include his wife, Shirley, of Charles City; three children, Kelly (Ginny) Weiss, of Gilbert, Ariz., Kari (Randy) Majors, of Park City, Utah, and Kory (Trisha) Weiss, of Charles City; eight grandchildren, Megan, Austin, Alex, Hannah, Jordyn, Luke, Callie and Nate; brother, Darwin (Maureen) Weiss of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the family.
