JOHN M. WELGUS
 

Pennsylvania WWII Veterans Bonus application filed on John Welgus on 25 January 1950.

Although he indicates that his mother, Mrs. Barbara Welgus, still his in his hometown  of Wilkes Barre, PA, he and his wife Lorraine were then residing in Augusta, GA.

If John was still in the Army, that may mean that he was stationed at nearby Fort Gordon.

Fort Gordon served as the training post for the 4th Infantry, 26th Infantry, and 10th Armored Divisions. Iyt also was the site of an internment camp for foreign prisoners of war.

Post war, it was a Separation Center and processed nearly 86,000 personnel for discharge from the Army.

Thereafter it became the HQ for the U.S. Signal Corps.

John enlisted in the Army at Wilkes Barre, PA on 27 February 1943.

On 1 May 1944 Pvt Welgus was transferred from Field Force Replacement Depot No. 8  to the Medical Detachment, 508th PIR.

He was appointed to the grade of Pfc on 27 November 1944 and then to Tec/5 on 12 March 1945..

SSgt Welgus re-enlisted on 10 November 1945 but his final date of discharge is unknown.

Hs military decorations include the French Croix de Guerre with Star, Combat Medic Badge for the Normandy, France Campaign, and the Bronze Service Arrowhead device for Holland campaign and Airborne operations
