WALTER WHITEBEAR

Walter registered for the draft in Nebraska ca. 1943 and listed his place of residence as Winnebago (Thurston county) which was the site of a Winnebago Indian Reservation.   He indicated he was unemployed at the time.

He was frequently listed in Indian Census records as part of the Winnebago nation and was once show to belong to the Ho Chunk Tribe which is actually the tribal name for what has become known as Winnebago tribe [learn more here]

Application for Headstone or Marker for Walter Whitebear to be erected in the Winnebago Indian Cemetery, Winnebago (Thurston county), Nebraska.

Note that two periods of service are shown.  The enlistment date of May 27, 1944 agrees with the National Archives enlistment record, he was discharged on 6 June 1946.

The second period began on 13 September 1950, when he was recalled to duty less than three months after the Korean Conflict began.

He may have decided to stay in the army as the second discharge date was 18 January 1960, 10 years after his recall.  Unfortunately he was given a discharge for "Other Than Honorable Conditions" which implies that he got into some serious trouble.

Interestingly, also shown is his claim number for Veteran Administration Benefits, something that that type of discharge does not normally qualify for.
