WILFORD L. WHITNEY

Wilford L. Whitney Sr., an Army veteran of World War II, died Friday (Sept. 13, 2002) in his West Seneca home following a long illness. He was 77.

Whitney was born in Buffalo and left of Burgard High School in his senior year to join the Army. He was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

Whitney worked as dispatcher for Blue Water Trucking from 1972 until his retirement in 1987.

Known as "Bill" to family members, Whitney enjoyed NASCAR auto racing and bowling, according to his brother Edward.

He also was a past commander of West Seneca Post 8113, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of the 82nd Airborne Association and West Seneca Post, American Legion.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, the former Doris Horton; a daughter, Kathleen Beaver of West Seneca; four sons, Dennis of Buffalo, Keith and Wilford Jr. of West Seneca and Philip of Buffalo; two sisters, LuVerne Locke of Williamsville and Mary Gleason of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two brothers, Richard of Corfu and Edward of West Seneca; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9 a.m. Monday in Fourteen Holy Helpers Catholic Church, 1345 Indian Church Road, Gardenville. Burial will be in East Koy Cemetery.
