ALVIN L. WIEGAND

Son of John and Regina Streitmatter Wiegand. He married Gisela Karl in 1947. He later married Gladys E. Henderson on Nov. 2, 1962, in Peoria. She died Dec. 5, 1985, in Texas. He then married Wilma Unsicker on June 9, 1990, in Morton. She survives. 

Also surviving are three sons, Hans-Jurgen Wiegand of Peoria, and Michael Wiegand and Scott Wiegand, both of East Peoria; one daughter, Mrs. William (Susan) Spencer of East Peoria; two stepsons, Alan Unsicker of Tremont and Dean Unsicker of Norcross, Ga.; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Terry (Rita) Stuber of Canton, Ga.; and two brothers, Clarence of Decatur and Edward "Ted" of East Peoria. 

Also surviving are seven sisters, Mrs. Lindsey (Anne) Gay and Mrs. Leslie (Martha) Storrer, both of East Peoria, Mrs. Charles (Louise) Boyle of Tremont, Mrs. Ben (Esther) Hohulin of Goodfield, Mrs. Ernest (Mary) Reber of Peoria, Mrs. John (Helen) Baker of Shelbyville and Mrs. Phillip (Lydia) Winter of Palm Harbor, Fla.; seven grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and four step-great-grandchildren. 

One sister and four brothers preceded him in death. 

A World War II Army veteran, he was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division. He served in an honor guard at the Potsdam Conference. 

He was an operating engineer for Edward Wiegand Co. and for Janzen and Schafer Co. He was an operating engineer and supervisor for Wiegand & Storrer Co. He later was a utility contractor in Illinois, Texas and Arkansas. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 649 in Peoria. 

He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Morton.

Burial will be in Fondulac Cemetery in East Peoria.

Grave marker for Alvin L. “Al” Wiegand in Section K, Lot 136, Grave 6, Fon du Lac Township Cemetery, East Peoria (Tazewell county), Illinois.

Alvin registered for the draft in Tazewell county, Illinois on his 18th birthday, 3 March 1943.

His enlistment record is not on file with the National Archives.

On 6 March 1946 Pfc Wiegand was awarded a Good Conduct Medal in General Order 13, Paragraph 3.

Alvin married Gisela Karl in Frankfurt in 1947.

On 16 June 1950 Alvin and Gisela, accompanied by son Jurgen (3) and daughter Susan (1) sailed in first class accommodations on the SS Veendam from New York, NY to Rotterdam, Holland.  Their intended duration of visit was shown as two months.

On 20 August 1950 Alvin and his family were listed as first class passengers on the SS Noordam manifest arriving in New York, NY from Bremen, Germany.
