Clay enlisted in the Army at Fort Thomas, Newport, KY on 12
November 1942. Pvt Williams was transferred to Company G, 508th PIR
six days later.
Pfc Williams was the Demolitions School at Fort Benning on 1
April 1943 and returned to duty 7 days later. On 5 November 1943 he
was promoted to Corporal.
Cpl Williams was wounded in action in Normandy on 15 June
1944 and did not return to duty until 10 September 1944, just in time to
join the company for the combat jump into Holland.
He was wounded for the second time on 25 September 1944 and
returned to duty on 6 December 1944 but immediately transferred to Service
company for light duty.
A week later he was deemed fit for full duties and returned
to Company G just before the regiment was pressed into action for the Battle
of The Bulge. He was hospitalized on 31 January 1945.
His military decorations include the Combat Infantryman Badge
for action during Normandy, France Campaign, 6 June 1944 to 9 July 1944 |
