CHESTER W. WILLIAMS
Chester M. Williams, 79, of 6645 Pinetree Lane, Frazeysburg, Ohio, died at 9:10 p.m. Thursday, October 7, 1999, at Adams Lane Care Center, Zanesville, Ohio.

Born May 14, 1920 in Dresden, Ohio, he attended Dresden High School and retired in 1985 from Muskingum County Maintenance Department. He had formerly worked 22 years for K.C. Layman in Frazeysburg. He was a veteran of World War II where he served as a Staff Sergeant in the Army Air Corp 82nd Airborne Division, and he was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

He was a member of the Frazeysburg Untied Methodist Church; a life member of Wakatomika Post #6193, V.F.W. of Frazeysburg; the Frazeysburg Veterans Club; and Frazeysburg Lodge #490 F. & A.M.

Surviving are his wife, Hazel (Swope) Williams, whom he married April 18, 1949; one son, Michael A. Williams of Painesville, Ohio; one daughter, Roberta Tapley of Topeka, Kansas; one brother, Frank R. Willliams of Columbus, Ohio; six grandchildren, Curtis Williams of Dresden, Cassy Schumacher of Frazeysburg, Kristi Larimer of Nashport, Ohio, David, Sheila and Bobbi Jo Tapley, all of Topeka, Kansas; six great grandchildren, Brittany Schumacher, Dillon and Mason Larimer, Joey Tapley, and Patrick and Josie Wells; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester and Glenna (Holbein) Williams; a daughter in-law, Brenda (Untied) Williams; five brothers and seven sisters.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, October 10, at Vensil-Orr Funeral Home, 110 Third Street, Frazeysburg. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 11, 1999 at the funeral home with Rev. Mary Ellen Walters officiating.

Burial will be in Frazeysburg Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Frazeysburg United Methodist Church, Post Office Box 455, Frazeysburg, Ohio 43822.

Chester enlisted in the Army at Fort Hayes, Columbus, OH on 7 February 1942.

Pvt Williams' initial service career is unknown but by 15 August 1943 he was a T/4 assigned to Hq 1st, 508th PIR.

On 6 March 1944, now a SSgt, he was part of an advanced detail sent to Nottingham, England in preparation of the regiment's movement from Ireland.

SSgt Williams made the jump into Normandy on D-day, 6 June 1944 and emerged from 33 days of combat unscathed.

On 17 September 1944 he made his second combat jump into Holland.  He was wounded in action on 6 October 1944 and was apparently evacuated as his name no longer appears on 508th records.

SSgt Williams' military decorations include the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman Badge awarded for action during the Normandy, France Campaign, 6 June 1944 to 9 July 1944
