Grave markers for June M. Williamson,
62, [1925 - 1972}, in the Smyrna United Methodist Church Cemetery, Robbins
(Moore County), North Carolina. A farm hand with
only 1 year of high school under his belt, June was just 18 when he enlisted
in the U.S. Army on October 1, 1943 at Fort Bragg, NC. With that place
of enlistment, it is not hard to understand how he may have been enticed to
volunteer for parachutist duty.
After completing basic training and jump school he was
sent overseas to the 11th Replacement Depot and from there he transferred into
the 508th's G Company on 10 August 1944.
A month later, on September 19th, he jumped intro the area
of Nijmegen, Holland as part of Operation Market Garden.
His wife Geneva, who survived him by 27 years is
buried at his side. |
