Grave markers for Leonard W. Witthar in Dover Cemetery, Dover (Lafayette), Missouri.

Leonard enlisted in the Army at Jefferson Barracks, MO on 2 July 1942.

The record of Pvt Witthar's arrival in Service Company, 508th PIR is unknown as all 1942 Morning Reports for the company are missing.

Pfc Witthar was transferred from Service Company to Company G on 2 March 1944.

On 23 June 1944, Pfc Witthar as wounded in action ad evacuated to a field hospital. 

Three months later, still hospitalized, he was transferred to the hospital's Detachment of Patients and did not return to the regiment.

Pfc Witthar's military decorations include the Purple Heart and the Bronze Service Arrowhead which was awarded for participation in the Normandy assault.
