DONALD P. WRIGHT

Wright, Donald P. - 83, of Glide, Oregon passed away at his home Thursday, June 14
. Don was born in Glide, December 18, 1917, to Jessie (Hatfield) and Perry L. Wright. He was delivered in a cabin his father built at Lone Rock on the east side of the Umpqua River Ferry crossing.
Don grew up with his parents on the Illahee. He attended school in Dixonville where he lived with relatives during the school year because of distance. He often commented that he missed the mountains when he was away.
Don lived a full and adventurous life. He was working at Mid Way Island when WWII broke out. He then served as an army paratrooper in the 508th, F company. He was dropped behind enemy lines, captured and later liberated at the end of the war. His army company still holds reunions each year which he always tried to attend. This year the reunion is in Oregon and hosted by Don's family.
After the war Don worked as a carpenter until 1953 and built his own home on Little River in Glide. Later he ran an engineering road crew for Champion International until his retirement in 1983.
Don had many hobbies that produced numerous artifacts for his family and friends. These included ships made to scale, raw hide bridles and halters, macramé, woodchip carvings, hand made rope, forged iron and too many others to name. He loved the mountains and especially when camping, canoeing or visiting around the campfire. He will be missed by family and friends.
Don is survived by his wife, Norma Jean (Shrum), his daughter and son in law, Tonya and Steve Thompson of Glide, his son and daughter in law, Terry and Pam Wright of Glide, three grandchildren, Angela Wright, Tina Fessenden and John Thompson. One great granddaughter, Maya Geer.
Memorial and reception will be hosted by the family at the Glide Community Center, Saturday June 23, 1 PM.
