(courtesy of Beverly Witmer)

Grave marker for Virgil B. Zaehringer and spouse in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Muscatine (Muscatine county), Iowa.

Virgil enlisted at Cp Dodge, Herrold, IA on 20 July 1943 and was assigned to Company "I", 508th.

Pvt Zaehringer was listed as "seriously injured in action" on 17 September 1944 in Holland and transferred to a field hospital.  On 19 December 1944 his status was changed to "attached to hospital detachment of patients", inferring that his convalesced would be extensive and he would remain hospitalized and could be dropped from the 508th PIR rolls.

He did not return to the regiment and was discharged on 26 February 1945.
