Seven Trophies
During One Month
A victorious month
for the "Red Devils" in competitive activities was that of May.
Various 508th teams accumulated seven trophies vying with other
post units during that time. "
Beginning the chain of victories was the Small Bore Rifle team
which was comprised of Lt. John W Markham, Lt Charles Root,
George A. Mulllnnlx, MSgt. Charles W. Vinson, and MSgt. Edgar
Lockman. Sergeant Vinson is to be commended for making the
highest individual score among other participants In the match.
Able Company's 60 MM Mortar Team defeated other teams in the
gunner's test and marksmanship firing. Members of the team were
SFC Leon Fleming, Squad leader; Pvt. James Jorgenson, gunner;
Pvt. Bohdan W. Blidy, assistant gunner; Pvt. Robert W. Scholl,
ammo bearer; and Pvt. Augustine Vallejo, ammo bearer. Trainer
for the team was MSgt. Charles Wingate.
Honors were extended to Company K's 57 MM Recoilless Rifle Team
when it Joined the winning circle. The team acquired 136
points out of a possible 140 in crew drill and firing. It was
composed of SFC Alfred A. Daniels, squad leader and trainer; SFC
Walter A. Banas, gunner; Cpl. James H. Clark., assistant gunner;
CPL Clyde H. Freeman and Sgt. Fred Petruskln, ammo-bearers.
The 508th High Powered Rifle Team equaled their Fort Benning
record of achievement when they won over other teams. The team
consisted of Lt. Norman J. Duplain, MSgts. Willis L. Powell,
George W. Ivy, Burney C. Jetton, Frances E Redfera, Jesse L.
Watts, Joseph L. Davis, Charles W Vinson, and Peter Tessner.
Many congratulations were extended to Sgt. Franklin D. Barfleld,
Motor Sergeant of Service Battery 320th Airborne Field Artillery
Battalion for receiving the Pvt. Mike Markos (88) Trophy for the
best 2 1/2 ton truck on post.. The .award was presented to Sgt.
Barfield by Maj. Gen Wane C Smith, Fort Campbell and 11th Abn.
Division Commander, during the Armed Forces Day celebration.
The. 105 MM Howitzer Team from "B" ' Battery 320th Abn. FA Bn
earned their trophy in a stiff competition from other teams.
Members of the team included SFC G. T. Wright. SFC S. White,
PFCs. J. P. Moran. C. B. Watson, J. L. Olbson. J. V. Paduck, E.
L. Miller, P. L. Falgoust, W. L. Hayes and D. V. Kipp.
Support Company's 4.2 Mortar Team received the 2d Lt. Leslie F
Kornowske (88) Trophy for proficiency in the firing match.
These commendable achievements were Indicative of the
cooperation, esplrlt de corps, and high caliber of troopers
found in the 508th. Not only are they "Fury from the Sky" but
fury on the ground as well.
