   LONDON: A broken German Army which once numbered 300,000 men 
		abandoned tanks by the score In a rapid retreat across the flat Steppers of the ’'Eastern 
		Ukraine Friday reeling in confusion before a triumphant Red Army which was 
		smashing toward Poland and Rurnania [sic, spelling changed to ""Romania"
		in 1975] in one of the great Allied victories of the war.	Field

Fritz Von Mannsten lashed back with counterattacks at some points in a desperate effort to reform 
		his lines and restore order but he could not stop the Russians, The Red 
		Army poured fresh troops into the battle widened the breach in the heart 
		of the Nazi eastwall to 200 miles and pounded Westward down to the last 
		35 miles to the pre-war Polish border and Southward toward the Nazis Bug 
		River defenses before the border of Old Rumania. 
		
		NAVY HONORS HEROES OF TARAWA AND MAKIN 
   Washington: Valor of the men who drove the Japanese from Tarawa and 
		Makin Islands will be commemorated in the names of two  aircraft 
		carriers/  The Navy announced Friday that at the suggestion of 
		Admiral Ernest J. King, Commander-in-Chief of  the Fleet two new 
		carriers will e named U.S.S. TARAWA and U.S.S., MAKIN ISLAND.  The 
		Tarawa. a large aircraft carrier, is now under construction at the 
		Norfolk, Va. Navy Yard.  The MAKIN ISLAND, an escort carrier, known 
		heretofore as WOODCLIFF BAY, is being built at the Kaiser Shipyard at 
		Vancouver, Wa. 
		HOMEFRONT LABOR BATTLE BREWS 
		
		   WASHINGTON:  In a new flare-up of bitterness over the 
		administration handling of the railroad wage dispute Unions representing 
		100,000 non-operating employees withdrew their demands from arbitration 
		by President Roosevelt. Advising the President they would not agree to 
		arbitration "on the basis propose", leaders of the group told him the 
		procedure he outlined would be a Gross injustice".  Mr. Roosevelt 
		gave no  indication of his reaction of the Unions turndown or whether he has 
		any new step in mind. The development however further clouded the 
		outlook for a settlement and increased the prospect, that the Army may 
		keep control of the railroads indefinitely.
		 
		FIRST LATIN-AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE 
		 
		(CNS) General Mascaronhas de Morais of the Brazilian General Staff has 
		arrived in Algiers with a party of 13 Brazilian officers to confer with Allied 
		military leaders preliminary to dispatching Brazilian ground troops and 
		air forces to serve with allied troops in 'Europe or Africa.. The units will 
		comprise the first expeditionary force ever sent oversees from a 
		Latin-American republic.
