EDITORIAL
It's probably true of every regiment that hits an American port of embarkation, and we're no exception. That is, the Idea that life in the army Is one greet big Joke, But the time
always comes, such as now in our own case when, for the first time In an
Army career, a man realizes that the score Is changing,
We're talking about the deadly seriousness of what is happening
and what will inevitably be. These words are not directed to O246AA [the
regimental convoy ID] as a whole - the majority of the men are sane, rational.
Rather, we're talking to that ever prevalent minority that never has but
certainly should, at least at this stage of the game, begin thinking clearly.
There's absolutely no excuse for a man to sneak a smoke when nobody's looking, or to
foolishly roam a deck with an untied life preserver slung carelessly over
a shoulder. It adds up to nothing mere than bad sense for the
perpetrator end poor psychology for the guy destined to live and fight alongside him.
This is it. The absolutely real thing. And the call to "get on the ball" isn't any longer
a routine GI order. A man in an invasion barge once said, "Hey, they're shooting
at usl" Let's not have anyone in O246AA pull a classic like that one.
TITTER TATTER
A certain colonel in the first battalion: "What a helluva
way to spend ten days of your life.!! ..... Lt. Shavitch finally came out of hibernation. Was
recently seen at chow for the first time in 9 meals.
... Add shipboard chatter: Capt. Kline: "Have you subscribed to the Atlantic
Monthly?" Maj. Shannon: "No, I make my contribution to the Atlantic Daily."
DRAFT BOARD BATTING 1000
Selective-c Service is still batting a cool 1.000 In
professional big league baseball circles. Among the latest to answer
Uncle Sam's invitation are: Welker Cooper, Harry Wailer, Lou Klein and Jonny Hopp of the St. Louis
