When the
USAT James Parker steamed out of the Port of New York, life took on
a number of dramatic and notable changes. One of these changes
was the fact that the men would be served only two meals a day due
to the limited mess facilities available. The following
sitting assignment was published under the title "HEADQUARTERS
U.S.A.T. JAMES PARKER" as the ship set sail on its 19th voyage.
The
seating arrangement went into effect on 29 December 1943, the first morning
at sea. Breakfast was to be served in two sittings at 0730 and
0815 while dinner was to be served at 1700 and 1745. The
assignments remained in effect during the entire 12-day voyage.
2nd Lt. George Gurwell, whose name appears on page 2,
kept this set of documents and they were provided from his estate to us by his
daughter, Sue Talley. . Note that the column titled "FATE" is a
handwritten notation made by Mr. Gurwell regarding what became of
each of these officers during the Normandy campaign. |
