On December 20, 1943 the 508th moved to Camp Shanks, NY, nicknamed by the G.I.'s as  "Last Stop, USA" because the camp was used solely as a staging point for overseas shipment.  Shanks was located on the banks of the Hudson River and not far from the port of New York city.  Hearts were probably heavy and minds elsewhere as Christmas was fast upon them it was clear that no one would join their loved ones on this holiday.

Their stay at Camp Shanks would be the shortest stop of all in the Red Devils' meandering odyssey.   On Christmas Day, only five days after their arrival,  the unit was placed on alert.
