508TH ON THE SCENE

Where is Everyone Else?
A group of "scattered" men of the 508th in Ravenoville after having left Saint Marcouf.  Capt Kenneth Johnson stands, 2nd from right.

These men are from Hq & Hq Co. S- 2 Intelligence Section, 508th PIR of the 82nd U.S. Airborne in Ravenoville.

   T
he group consists of: Capt. Kenneth L. Johnson, Capt. Robert Abraham (Company CO), SSgt Worster M. Morgan, Pfc Luther M. Tillery, Pfc Joel R. Lander, Pvt John G. McCall, Pfc James R. Kumler, and T / 5 Donald J. MacLeod. The photo was taken by T/4 Reuben Wiener, a combat photographer attached to the 508th.

Matching The Scene Today
Note that in the original photo (above) there are two columns behind the second and third trooper on the left of the photo. there is also the curved archway behind Capt Johnson (second from right).  Also on the right is the comparison end of wall and gateway.  However it appears some building work occurred post war on the small archway in the centre of the photo and it was enlarged to vehicle size.

Pensive Moment during a lull in the hedgerow firefights.
   Trooper is unidentified

Benjamin H. Vandervoort, C.O. 2nd Bn, 505th PIR was apparently cropped out of the photo at left.
   Vandervoort was Gavin's S-3 in Sicily. Promoted to Lt Col on June 2, 1944, he led the 2nd Bn, 505th in Normandy and Holland.  He was wounded by mortar fire in Garonne, Belgium and retired from service in 1946.
   John Wayne portrayed Vandervoort in the movie "The Longest Day"
