SHOT DOWN NEAR KRANENBURG, HOLLAND (1 of 2)

   At around 13.30 hours on 17 September 1944, Aircraft 42-100863 of No. 441/99th Troop Carrier Squadron, letter 'M' on the tail fin, was shot into flames in a heavy concentration of anti-aircraft fire near the drop zone at Groesbeek, Holland. All those on board managed to bail out with the exception of Pvt Bellesfield and the crew of this C-47.
     The aircraft crashed to the ground about two miles to the south-east of the Drop Zone near Groot-Linden

AMERICAN MEMORIAL ON THE KERKSTRAAT, LINDEN, HOLLAND

  This monument is in the municipal cemetery on Church street (Kerkstraat) in Linden (near Cuijk). The monument has been set on the wall that surrounds the cemetery.
  In memory for the soul of James Martin and his comrades who died 7 Sept 1944

The text on the shield near the monument can be translated as follows:

   Aircraft 42-100863 of 441/ 99TH Troop Carrier Squadron was shot down in flames on September 17th, 1944, near the drop zone of Groesbeek in a heavily concentrated anti-aircraft barrage.
   All paratroopers onboard were able to leave the aircraft apart from Private Bellesfield and the crew of the C-47A.
   On its way back the aircraft was hit again and crashed in flames near the little village of Groot-Linden.
   On September 20th, 1944, they were interred in this cemetery and on March 18th, 1946, they were re-buried at the military cemetery of Margraten.
