CHALK 65, OPERATION MARKET

   On 16 September 1944, Sgt Joseph R. Anderson handed in his stripes and pinned on the "butter bars" of a 2nd Lt. and assumed the role of assistant Platoon Leader.
   The following day he and his platoon members boarded aircraft #42-93708, a C-47A with the number 65 written in chalk near the boarding door.  It was but one of the eleven aircraft used to lift Hq 2nd personnel for their jump in Operation Market.
  The aircraft was flown by 2nd Lt Thomas E. O'Brien, of the 442nd Troop Carrier Group.
