HOMEWARD BOUND FROM CAMP SHANKS

HOMEWARD BOUND
from
CAMP SHANKS. N.Y.
New York Port of Embarkation

This handout appears to have been largely a Western Union advertisement piece although it took on the guise of an information sheet. The subtle message here was "Don't go home without telling the folks you are on the way" and thousands of them did just that.
Included was a quick reference of typical telegraph rates to select cities in the northeast, the home area for returning G.I.'s   being served by Camp Shanks
.

Interesting Facts
about Camp Shanks

Admittedly, there are some interesting facts regarding Camp Shanks presented here.
Details such as the fact that the nearby Piermont Pier was limited to accommodating ships carrying no more than 3,000 troops meant that ships such as the Queen Mary had to dock in New York harbor requiring the men to be transported to Shanks by bus.
The fact that the five telegraph offices are shown in red on the map is quite interesting as well.
