VICTORY PARADE (1) |
[Dixon Evening Telegraph, Dixon, Illinois,
11 Jan 1946, Friday, Page 1] |
Dixon, Oregon, Amboy, Walnut and Rochelle Soldiers in New York Parade |
Sgt. Franklin W. Mann, Pfc. William E. Whitford and Pfc. Kenneth Kenneth E. Eshelman of Dixon: Maj. Paul E.
Vaupel and Lt. Frank J Oblak of Oregon, Sgt. George D Ketchum of Amboy;
Pfc. Norman O. Larson and Pvt. Nelson Bernard of Rochelle and Pfc.
Robert Hayden of Walnut will be among the 13.000 airborne troops who
will swing up Fifth avenue in New York Saturday in a national Victory
parade,
This parade will be for the nameless Joe who fought the Germans on
the ground and in the air from Nov. 7, 1942, to May 9, 1945, and the men
taking part will accept the acclaim of millions in the name of the
3,000,000 men who fought the battle of Europe and the 170,000 who died
in winning it.
|
Troops of the 82nd airborne division, chosen
because they best represent the modern, three-dimensional warfare that
won in Europe, Europe, will begin an 80-block parade at Washington
Square at 3 p m. Saturday
and will pass in review at 82nd street after the long march.
Most of the men who will take part in the parade Saturday are
either eligible for discharge now or will be soon, and waiting in New
York for the parade has cost many of them 10 days of civilian life.
Given their choice, while still in Europe, of coming home and parading
with the division thus delaying discharge, or shipping to the United
States with other units for immediate discharge, most of them chose to
stay with their outfit. |
