Grave marker for Pvt Manuel L. Alvarez at Section G, Lot 61, Space 10 in
the Santa Ana Cemetery, Santa Ana (Orange county), California.
Manuel enlisted in the Army at Los Angeles, CA on 27
October 1943. He volunteered for parachutist duty and after
completion of jump school was sent to the 11th Replacement Depot in
England. On 10 August 1944 he was one of many replacements
transferred to the 508th which had suffered heavy losses in Normandy.
Pvt Alvarez was assigned to Company A. He was in the same stick as
his platoon leader, Lt Rex Combs, when they parachuted into Holland on
17 September 1944.
Pvt Alvarez was killed in action on 19 September 1944 and was awarded the
Purple Heart |
