(courtesy of "Glenn")
Grave marker for Nicholas V. Battiste in Plot H, 0, 8168 of the Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale (Suffolk), New York.

He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman Badge posthumously.

Official Statement Of Death

This letter from Department of The Army attested to the fact that Nicholas V. Battiste was killed in action on June 8, 1944.  Addressed to Nicholas' brother George, the letter is dated nearly six years following Nicolas' death.  [George was the sole surviving family member as Nicholas's  father and mother died before the war at a young age.]

It is thought that the family needed an official statement in order to apply for life insurance or other form of survivor benefits.
