Grave marker for Pfc James H. Beckelhymer in
the Plot B, 864 of the Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno (San Mateo
county), California.
James enlisted in the Army in San Francisco, CA on 18
December 1943 and served as a member of Company D, 508th.
On 28 December 1944 Pvt Beckelhymer was evacuated from the
regiment's location in Belgium, probably due to frostbite. He was
officially transferred out of the regiment on 12 April 1945 as he was
still unable to return to duty.
Apparently he recovered and was transferred to the 812th
Ordnance Base Depot company.
The
812th Ordnance Base Depot company was part of 4 ½ Base Regiments, 9
Battalions and 91 Companies (approximately 950 officers and 26,112
enlisted men). The regiments were initially staffed by volunteers
from the National Automobile Dealers Association; International
Harvester Company; American Road Builders association; John Deere
Company; The J.I. Case Company; The Allis-Chalmers Company and The
Associated Equipment Distributors. Since their factories were
manufacturing the munitions it was an expedient to build the ordnance
regiments with the men from the factories.
Pfc
Beckelhymer died on active duty, specific circumstance and location
currently unknown. He was initially interred in the Cambridge
American Cemetery, England. His remains were repatriated and
reinterred on 3 March 1949 in the Golden Gate National Cemetery, San
Bruno, CA. |
