PVT JAMES S. CAMPBELL

Grave marker for Pvt James S. Campbell in the Brookside Cemetery, Deerfield (Franklin county), Massachusetts.

James enlisted in the army at Springfield, Massachusetts on 22 November 1943.

Pvt Campbell volunteered for parachutist duty and was assigned to Company D, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

The 508th was alerted on 18 December 1944 to go into action for the Battle of The Bulge with just 24 hours notice.

Pvt Campbell was killed in action two weeks later. He was initially interred in the Henri Chapelle Temporary American Cemetery, Henri Chapelle, Belgium in Plot ZZ Row 7 Grave 134.

Following the war and the completion of the permanent cemetery, his family opted to return his remains to his hometown area. He now lies next to his father who was a WWI veteran.

NOTE: Although the gravestone indicates his date of death as 10 January 1945, the Company A Morning Reports stated that his death occurred on 12 January.
