Meets Death
In Invasion

  Watkins Glen---  Mrs. Mable Carpenter of S. Decatur St., has been advised by the War Department that her son, Pvt. Edwin Carpenter, 22, met death June 6 during the invasion of France. He had been in the armed services three years, first with the Signal Corps and then with the Paratroopers.
   Mr. Carpenter, an employee of the New York Telephone Co., in Elmira, at the time he entered the service, was the first Schuyler County man to make the supreme sacrifice in the invasion. He has two sisters, Mrs. Lois Wilson, secretary to the principal of the Odessa Central School, and Mrs. Milton Burt, wife of Deputy Sheriff Burt.

Church Plans Soldier Tribute
   Odessa --- A memorial service for Edwin Franklin Carpenter of the Paratroopers, who made the supreme sacrifice in the D-Day invasion of France. June 6, will be held at the Baptist Church Sunday evening.

Purple Heart
Sent to Son

   The Order of the Purple Heart, awarded to Pfc. Edwin F. Carpenter who was killed in action in France on D-Day, has been sent to his two and a half year old son, Edwin Carpenter Jr. Edwin and his mother, Mrs. Anne Brasted Carpenter, are living at 533 Schuyler Ave. Pfc. Carpenter was a native of Odessa.

Pfc Carpenter, a member of A Company, was killed in action on June 6, 1944 and was awarded the Purple Heart,


Interment Record

shows that Pfc Carpenter's remains had been previously interred in the Blosville-Carentan cemetery, France.
   After the lengthy delay in processing and transportation he was laid to final rest on 4 May 1948, nearly 4 years after his death
