Henry Hoy Chan was born in China on 8
August 1916 and immigrated to the U.S. in 1921 at age 4 or 5, presumably
with one or more of his parents.
However, the 1930 Federal census lists
him as age 14 and a ward in the care of the Chang Mei Home on Ninth
Street, Berkeley (Alameda county), California.
On
16 October 1940, Henry registered for the draft and entered service six
days later in
San Francisco on 22 October.
He was transferred to the 508th PIR although the record of his arrival
is unavailable. He first appears in Service Company, as he was
going on furlough on 31 August and returning on 11 September.
Pfc Chan was transferred from Service Company to the Hq 2nd on 27
November 1943. Following the Normandy campaign he was transferred
to the Medical Detachment.
Listed as #10 for Market Garden Chalk 65, C-47 (42-93708AF) Henry made
the jump into Holland on 17 October 1944 with 13 other members of Hq
2nd..
On 14 November, Pfc Chan was injured when an English truck he was riding
in rolled over and his neck was broken. He died the following day. |
