In Korean War
Master Sgt. James M.
Cochenour has been reported missing in action in Korea since Nov. 30,
1950. He left the states for Korea July 29, 1950. He is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilby Cochenour and his wife was the former Mary Lou
Rausch, of Plain City.
Sgt Cochenour received his basic training in Camp Blanding, Fla.,
and later trained at Fort Benning, Ga. where he received his paratroop
wings.
He served in the 508th Parachute Infantry, 82nd Airborne Division,
during the last war and jumped over Normandy on D-Day. He also
served in the Netherlands, Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge.
He was wounded Dec, 26, 1944 in Belgium. For his bravery
during the past war he received these medals:
Purple Heart, American Campaign Medal, European African Middle
Eastern campaign medal, 4 bronze stars, bronze arrowhead, Good
Conduct Medal, Presidential unit citation, combat infantry Badge, Dutch
Bronze Cross, World War II Victory Medal, and Belgian Fourregere.
He was also honor guard for General Eisenhower at Frankfurt,
Germany.

Body of Soldier
Killed in Korea
To Be Buried Here
The body of MSgt James M. Cochenour,
Jerome Township, believed to ne the only Union County soldier killed in
the Korean War, will be returned here for burial this week.
He died in a north Korean prison camp on Feb. 28, 1951.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.. Mary Lou Cochenour Hysit, Columbus;
his mother. Mrs.. Wilby Cochenour, a sister, Mrs. Donald Fry, both of
near Plain City, and Mrs. Hazel Kendrick, Hillards; and an uncle :Lee
Cochenour, Columbus.
Friends may call at the Jay D. Ferguson funeral home in Plain City
after 7 p.m., Saturday. Graveside services will be held at Forest Grove
Cemetery, Plain City, conducted by the Rev. John V. Vance, pastor of the
New California, U. P, Church.

James enlisted in the army at Columbus, OH on 25 November
1942 and was assigned to Company "I", 508th. He was promoted
directly from the grade of Private to Sergeant on 11 November 1944.
Sgt Cochenour was wounded in action on 26
December 1944 and returned to duty on 15 April 1945.
On 28 February 1952 the Korean War Veterans Honor Roll
reported Master Sergeant James M Cochenour, U.S. Army; 3rd Infantry
Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division; taken prisoner on November 30, 1950 in
North Korea and that he died while a prisoner on February 28, 1951. |
