PFC LLOYD O. COFFMAN

Application for a headstone or marker and the resulting headstone for Pfc Lloyd O. Coffman at Plot R, Grave 101 in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas.

 

Lloyd registered for the draft on 6 July 1942 in Kilgore, TX.  He was inducted at Tyler, TX on 19 October 1942 and was assigned to Company E, 508th PIR..

On 11 March 1943, Pvt Coffman was attached to Company R,  1st PIR The Parachute School, Fort Benning, GA.  He returned to duty on 31 March.

Pvt Coffman was reported missing in action as of 7 June 1944.  His status was later changed to killed in action on 22 July 1944

He was initially interred in the Blosville Temporary Cemetery Plot U, Row 7, Grave 133.  His remains were disinterred on 11 December 1947 and repatriated on the SS Lawrence Victory (VC2-S-AP3) and were reinterred in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on 13 October 1948.  At the request of both families, his best friend T/5 J.C. Athey, Battery B, 158th Field Artillery, DOW in Sicily on 15 July 1943, was laid to rest next to Lloyd.

Pfc Coffman's military decorations include the Purple Heart.
