Pennsylvania Record of Burial Place of Veteran and grave
marker for Wayne J. Cordes.
Wayne
registered for the draft ca. 1941 and entered service on 1 January 1943.
On 6 August 1943, Pvt Cordes appeared on Special
Order 176 documenting his transfer from the Parachute School to Hq 2nd,
508th PIR. The Hq 2nd Morning Report for the same day listed
that he was assigned to the company as of 1830 hours.
On 2 September 1943 the morning report simply states
his status as "from Detached service to Transferred" but does not
indicate
where he was sent. Perhaps he was returned to the Parachute School
for further reassignment.
A
news article listing men from the Pittsburgh, PA vicinity
who had been wounded in combat mentioned Wayne was wounded somewhere
in the Mediterranean area

No further newspaper overage has
been found regarding Wayne.
On 20 January 1950, Wayne's mother, Violet
Cordes, submitted this application for the Pennsylvania WWII
Veterans Bonus. It indicates that Wayne died in the England
General Hospital, Atlantic City, NJ on 28 August 1944.
Apparently Pvt Cordes was brought to the U.S. for treatment of his
wounds but succumbed. The family received the full $500 bonus
amount. |
