Herman enlisted in the Army at Binghamton, NY on 13 August 1940 and later volunteered for parachutist duty.

On 16 October 1942 Cpl Dreste was transferred from the 507th PIR as a member of the Cadre team for the newly activated 508th PIR and was assigned to Company E.

On 13 April 1943 Pvt Dreste was transferred to the Parachute Pool, Fort Benning, GA where he was subsequently transferred to the 504th PIR.

Reduced to the rank of Private, he was transferred to transferred to the Parachute Pool, Ft Benning, GA on 13 April 1943.

He was subsequently transferred to the 504th PIR and promoted to PFC.  Pfc Dreste was killed in action on 24 November 1943 in Italy.  His death probably occurred in Central Italy based on 504th history.
