John enlisted in the Army at Boston, MA on 6 January 1942 and was assigned to Company B, 508th PIR.

Pvt Driscoll took part in the Normandy Invasion jump on D-Day and was reported in the 26 June 1944 Morning Report as Missing in Action as of 6 June 1944.  It was not until 1 November 1944 that he was confirmed as Killed In Action as of 6 June, a possible indication that he had come down in a flood zone and drowned.

Pvt Driscoll was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
