Headstone Inscription and Interment Record and marker for Pvt Kenneth A.
Everson in Block Q, Row 6, Grave 30, Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial, Hamm, Canton de
Luxembourg, (Luxembourg), Luxembourg.
A
native of Saskatchewan, Canada, Kenneth apparently lost his parents at
an early age. This 1933 Detroit border crossing record shows him
at age 9 in company of his adoptive grandfather and indicates he had
been residing in Ohio since 1928.
Kenneth enlisted in the Army at Akron, OH on 4 December
1943. His enlistment record listed him as "not yet a citizen."
Ther is no indication that he ever attained U.S.. citizenship.
On 19 December 1942, Pvt Everson was transferred from
Camp Toccoa, GA to Company "I", 508th PIR.
Kenneth "extended his leave" when he was due back to camp
on 22 April 1943 but was arrested and confined at Camp Perry, OH on 5
May 1943 .
He was transferred to USA Boston Armed Forces
Induction District, Boston, Mass on August 17th but went AWOL on 2
October 1943 and was apprehended in Cleveland, OH and returned to Camp
Mackall, NC on 27 November 1943. He then was transferred to Hq & Hq Co ABC on
27 November 1943.
He was killed
in action 26 February 1945 by artillery shell fragments, while serving with the
20th Infantry Battalion, 10th Armored Division.
Ironically,
he was reported as being killed "over Germany" and his father believed
his son had been in the Army Air Corps. The report, however, probably
should have read :"in Germany" as the history of the 10th Armored
Division indicates that "On 20 February 1945, the 10th again attacked the German defenses. In one day, they broke the German lines, and after 48 hours, the division advanced 85 miles, overran the Saar-Moselle Triangle, and reached the Saar River. "
Pvt Everson was killed one day after the drive began. |
