PVT BENJAMIN HOLLOWAY, JR.

Pvt. Holloway, a paratrooper was killed in action in Holland, Sept. 18. His parents received a letter from him Oct. 11, written in England the day before his death. Pvt Holloway, a paratrooper serving with an airborne division, entered the service May 19, 1943, and received his basic training at Camp Shelby, Miss., going overseas early last May. After his arrival in England he began training with the parachute infantry and graduated in July. On Wednesday his parents received a letter written at his base in England, and mailed the day before he met his death. Pvt. Holloway was born in Sullivan, Indiana, March 22, 1925, and came here with his parents in March, 1941. Prior to entering service he was employed in Mahoning Farm Bureau Co-operative. Besides his parents his two grandmothers survive.

THREE MORE LOCAL MEN HAVE GIVEN THEIR LIVES IN THEIR COUNTRY’S SERVICE KILLED IN HOLLAND

Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Holloway, North Broad street, were notified by the War Department Monday that their only child, Pvt. Benjamin Holloway Jr., was killed in action in Holland, September 18. Pvt Holloway, a paratrooper serving with an airborne division, entered the service May 19, 1943, and received his basic training at Camp Shelby, Miss., going overseas early last May. After his arrival in England he began training with the parachute infantry and graduated in July. On Wednesday his parents received a letter written at his base in England, and mailed the day before he met his death. Pvt. Pvt Holloway was a member of Company G, 508th and was killed in action 18 September 1944.

Holloway's name is engraved on the Sullivan County Indiana World War I & World War II Memorial.  The memorial is located  on the South/West corner of the Sullivan County Courthouse Lawn at the intersection of South Court Street and West Jackson Street. Click for map. . It is the centerpiece of a three-stone memorial.
   Holloway was initially assigned to the 271st Anti-Tank Company, 61st Division.  After his unit arrived n England he volunteered for parachutist duty and qualified in a jump school there.  It may have been conducted at Cottesmore where the 508th combined forces with other units to train new parachutists. 
   His name appears on page 100 (sheet 102) of the "Story of the 271st  Infantry Anti-tank Company"
