Grave marker for SSgt Joseph C. Lazzaro
at Plot F Row 3 Grave
43 in the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in
Colleville-sur-Mer, France
Joseph initially enlisted in the Army on 24 February
1933 and served in Company L, 10th Infantry. Honorably
discharged on 1 June 1933 he transferred to the National Guard.
With the outbreak of WWII the Guard was activated
and Joseph was called to active duty. SSgt Lazarro arrived in
Service Company
SSgt Lazzaro was killed in action on
June 15, 1944 and was awarded the Purple Heart.
In fact 2 - according to an entry in David Pike's
book AIRBORNE IN NOTTINGHAM, [page 14] pn about D-Day +3, SSgt
Lazzaro's body was found hanging from a tree due to a snagged chute.
The Germans had repeatedly bayoneted him.
