While In Holland
A Springfield paratrooper, who came
through D-Day with minor injuries, has been killed in action in Holland,
his widow was informed Friday.
According to a War Department telegram, Pfc Theodore H. Leonard,
21, met death in combat on Oct. 3, his widow, Mrs. Mary Leonard, has
been advised. They have a 15-month-old son, Theodore, Jr..
Pfc Leonard was a member of an airborne division which took part in
the invasion of France. Members of the division were scattered
over a wide area and were unable to assemble as a tactical unit until
the fourth day of the invasion.
Entering the Army in January 1943, Pfc Leonard received basic
training at Camp Joseph T. Robinson, Ark. after his transfer to the
paratroop corps he was stationed at Fort George Meade, Md. and at Ft.
Benning, Ga.
He was a graduate of Catholic Central High School, Class of 1942,
and was employed by the Allen Tool Co. prior to his induction.
In addition to his widow and son, who reside at 705 Dayton av., he
is survived by his mother, Mrs. H. C. Niemeyer, of Phoenix, Ariz.; a
sister, Mrs. T. P. Brewer, of Springfield; and a half brother, Roy Scott
of Fort Collins, Colo.
Memorial services will be held, probably next week, Mrs. Leonard

Theodore enlisted in the Army at Columbus, Ohio on 8
January 1943 and was assigned to Company E, 508th
Pfc Leonard was killed in action on 3 October 1944 and was awarded the Purple Heart. |
