Sterling GI In Jungle Operations
Pvt Gary a. Luttrell, son of Mrs. Mabel
N., Luttrell, Sterling, participated in "Operation Red Devil," a
parachute assault training exercise held in late December in the Canal
zone.
Luttrell is a rifleman with the 3rd battalion of the 508th
Infantry, stationed at Ft. Kobbe, C.Z. His unit trained for six
weeks in Vietnam-style jungle fighting in preparation for the exercise.

War Deaths
WASHINGTON (AP) --- The Defense
department announced Thursday the names of three Marines and a soldier
killed in action in Vietnam. Another Illinois solider died of wounds.
Killed in action were;
Army Spec. 4 Gary A. Luttrell, son of
Mrs. Mabel Luttrell, 811 W. 5th St., Sterling.
Marine Sgt Paul E. Kincaid, son of Mrs. Carol J. Grahn, Chicago.
Cpl Nicholas Beran Jr., husband of Mts. Nicholas Beran Jr.,
Chicago.
Marine Pfc James S. Stassi, son of Mr. and Mrs., Joseph Stassi,
Sr., 676 Leslie St., Wood River.
Army Pfc Clyde E. Long Jr. of Bridgeport died of wounds.
He was the son of Clyde E. Long Sr., 1323 Oak st., Bridgeport.

(Whiteside county), Illinois. SP/4 Luttrell was killed in action
on June 22, 1967 in Kon Tum province, Vietnam, located in the Central
Highlands region of Vietnam, near the borders with Laos and Cambodia.
He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
He had been "in country" less than two weeks when he was
killed. |
