Fred enlisted in the Army at Hartford, CT on 26 October 1943 and was assigned to Company E, 4508th PIR.

Pfc MacDonald was killed in action in France on 4 July 1944. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
