Grave marker for Pfc Walter H. Matheson at Plot E, Row 12, Grave 18,
in the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in Colleville-sur-Mer,
France.
Pfc Matheson was KIA in
Normandy on June 7, 1944 and was awarded the Purple Heart.
NOTE:On June 8th 1944 Captain Rex G. Combs wrote a note in his
diary about a paratrooper named "Matheson"
of Co. H. (believed to be Walter H. Matheson). Combs noted that he had been placed in charge of a composite
group of Co. H men and wrote "Saw Major Reeder's patrol to Carquebut & C. le-port
(probably meaning Carquebut le Port)".
"Matheson lost, so did six Jerry's". H Co. to hold, put out
defensive outposts. Evidently Walter went down fighting.
