Benjamin enlisted in the Army at Fort McClellan, AL on
27 June 1941.
Pvt Meadows was sent to OCS and after commissioning
was assigned to Hq 1st, 508th PIR on/about the day the regiment was
activated on 20 October 1942.
On 3 March 1944 2/Lt Meadows was sent on Detached
Service to England, undoubtedly as a member of the advanced team
establishing the camp at Wollaton Park, Nottingham. The regiment
arrived there on 13 March.
D-Day, 6 June 1944, saw Lt Meadows standing in the
door as jumpmaster of Chalk 8 and tasked as the Assistant Mortar Platoon
leader.
Lt. Meadows was killed in action on
June 22, 1944. His military decorations include the Purple Heart
and Combat Infantryman Badge, both awarded posthumously. |
