Camp Mackall w/training

Grave marker for SSgt Robert L. Montgomery in Block 24 Lot 72 of the Oak Hill Cemetery, Taylorville (Christian county), Illinois.

Robert enlisted in the Army at Peoria, IL on 27 October 1942 and became a qualified parachutist on 5 March 1943.

Initially assigned to Service Company, Pvt Montgomery was sent on detached service to the riggers school at Fort Benning on 13 August 1943.  He returned to duty at Camp Mackall, NC on 19 October 1943.

On 2 November 1943 Pvt Montgomery was transferred to Company F and was promoted to Corporal on 26 January 1944.

Cpl Montgomery was appointed to the grade of Sgt on 7 March 1944. It is not known when he was further elevated to SSgt.

SSgt Montgomery jumped into Normandy on 6 June 1944 and was killed in action near La Haye du Puits on 6 July 1944.  He was initially interred in the Blosville Cemetery in Plot 1, Row 6, Grave 119 until his remains were repatriated and buried here.
