Wilhelm
gained his citizenship and adopted the anglicized name of William.
William
enlisted in the Army at Camp Dodge, Herrold, IA on 13 October 1942.
A
parachutist volunteer, Pvt Muenster was sent to Camp Blanding FL
to join with the 508th PIR which was just being activated. Once
there he was assigned to Company C.
Pfc Muenster
jumped into Normandy on 6 June 1944 and was initially listed as KIA on
15 June 1944. A subsequent Morning Report corrected that date as 6
June 1944.
He was
initially interred in the Blosville Cemetery, Plot A, Row 1, Grave 9
until his remains were repatriated and laid to rest in Fort Dodge.
