The telegram that every family dreaded was sent to Pvt Pence's mother, Mary, on July 25, 1944.  The terse wording of "THE SECRETARY OF WAR DESIRES TO EXPRESS HIS DEEP REGRET THAT YOUR SON PRIVATE MARION L PENCE WAS KILLED IN ACTION ON FOURTEEN JUNE IN FRANCE LETTER TO FOLLOW. /s/ ULTO THE ADJUTANT GENERAL" was the manner in which each family first learned of a loved one's loss.

Note that Marion had been killed approximately six weeks before the family was notified of his death.
