PVT JOHN P. PERDUE

Grave marker for Pvt John P. Perdue in the temporary U.S. cemetery in Plot B, Row 5 Grave 87 in Molenhoek American Cemetery, Holland. where the 508th casualties were first buried. Pvt. Perdue was killed in action on September 28, 1944 and was awarded the Purple Heart with one Oak Leaf Cluster..

   This photo was taken by Roger L. Kitchen when he returned to Holland for the memorial services held there on Sept. 17 1945, the first anniversary of Operation Market Garden. The inscription on the back of the photo reads, "My best buddy', Sept. 17, 1945".

   Photo was taken Sept 4,1944 at Nottingham, England, on the grounds of the castle at Wollaton Park where the 508th lived in tents.

   Roger Kitchen clearly mourned the loss of the man whom he had called "My best buddy" as he carried this photo of he and Perdue in his wallet for the rest of his life.

After the war ended, Pvt. Perdue's remains and those of many other men of the 508th were exhumed and relocated to the permanent cemetery at Margraten, Holland.  He rests there today at Plot F Row 3 Grave 11 .
