CPL VERNILE G. PIERCE

 (courtesy of Rex Combs collection)

 (courtesy of Tim Cook)

Grave marker for Sgt V. G. Pierce at Plot B Row 7 Grave 124 in the Molenhoek Temporary Cemetery,  Mook, Holland.

Lt. Rex Combs wrote on the back of the photo " Cpl. V. G. Pierce Co. “A” landed near me in Wyler, Germany".  Nothing about the circumstances of his death was included other than the previously known fact that Rex and a few others overshot the DZ and landed in Wyler which borders the Netherlands at that point..

This photo was taken in September 1945 when the regiment revisited the area for memorial services.

Grave markers for Sgt Vernile G. Pierce in the Littlefield Cemetery, Littlefield (Lamb county), Texas.

Although it had earlier been thought that Vernile was killed in or near Wyler, Germany, he apparently died on Devil's Hill, Holland.

He was awarded the Purple Heart, posthumously.
