PVT GEORGE L. RICHEY
LAST RITES SET
FOR BAY SOLDIER
KILLED IN ACTION

   Last rites will be held Thursday for Pvt. George L,. Richey, 20. of Oakland, who was killed in action while serving with the 82nd Airborne Division in Holland.
   A native of Texas, Richey was living in Oakland and working at a Richmond shipyard at the time of his enlistment.
   Survivors include his father. W L. Richey of Texas; his mother, Mrs. Rosie Richey of Campbell: four brothers. Doyle, Lavern, Roddy and J. D. Richey, all of Campbell, and three sisters. Mrs. Gladys Jackson and Mrs. Marie Olivero, both of Berkeley, and Mrs. Lois Chastain of Richmond Services will be held at 12 30 p.m. Thursday at Golden Gate National Cemetery. San Bruno.

Christened as Leroy George Richey, he adopted the variant of "George L" in later life.

Pvt Richey was killed in action on October 1, 1944 and was awarded the Purple Heart.

NOTE:  Pvt Richey's death was previously published as having occurred on 23 Sep 44.  The date on his headstone may reflect the date that Graves Registration located his body.  Without any other evidence they would have used that date.

The Richey Training Center - An Enduring Honor Accorded to the Memory of George Richey
   The Richey Training Center  is located at the heart of downtown San Jose across from the Santa Clara County Main Jail. It is an 8.7-acre lot that is used to be one of the United States Army Reserve Centers named after Pvt. George L. Richey who was killed in action in 1944 and was awarded the Purple Heart. It was declared surplus by the Federal Government and identified for closure in accordance with the Base Realignment and Closure Act (BRAC) of 2005.
   The County of Santa Clara took over the building in 2006 and converted it as a training facility for the Sheriff’s Office. It is currently one of the fully utilized training facilities and home of the Enforcement and Custody Bureau in-service training where various training classes are conducted such as Field Training Program, Force Options, Use of Force, Defensive Tactics, Arrest and Control Techniques, Body Worn Camera, First Aid and CPR, and many other in-service and mandatory training courses both for Enforcement and Custody Bureau. In addition, it is also a venue for other outside training courses such as PRO-Act training, DOJ Rap Sheet Training and many more. Source: The Richey Training Center
