Application for headstone and resulting grave
markers for Stanley J. Roth in Garden Of Memories, Metairie (Jefferson
Parish), Louisiana.
Stanley enlisted in the Army in 1942 and was
transferred to Co F, 508th PIR.
Pvt
Roth was listed missing in action as of 6 June 1944 and was later
determined to be a prisoner of war.
This record held by the National Jewish Welfare Board
shows that the War Department may not have confirmed his status until 3
October 1944, He was liberated from Stalag 4F after the war ended.
On
12 June 1945, Pvt Roth (line No, 49) arrived in New York City, NY aboard
the USAT Admiral Benson. He, as did all other enlisted men,
received pocket money in the form of 2500 French Francs, equivalent to
$50.44 Officers received twice as much (see lines 53-55).
Stanley re-enlisted in the army on 2 April 1946 and
appears to have taken on a new MOS. His physical condition
following his imprisonment may not have permitted him to regain jump
status.
But his Army career was cut short. Note that the application for his grave marker lists
Sgt Roth's date of death and discharge as being simultaneous. Thus
far, the actual circumstances of his death have not been learned but he
was still on active duty when it occurred. |
